TLCP: Promote some good, mature courses with a long history, or with special characteristics. Promote it to students and teachers at other universities. Students can self-study, “audit” classes, all the material should be available. Profs can also use it.

It’s very important that teachers are able to interact. Different types of universities teach in different ways, for example top research universities teach in one way, normal universities teach in another way. If I am a student at a mid-level university, I might want to know how this class is taught at different types of institutions. If a student from a normal university wants to do his or her graduate work at a research university, they might want to look at the class before they prepare for the exam. 

They hope that good courses should not just serve the local students. The final goal might be to make this material available for distance education, where one can study, get feedback, and get academic credit. We already have such a system, for XXX students. Before they used to come here to listen in on classes, now they can watch this online, and if they pass the exams, they will get the study credits. This doesn’t exist yet, but we hope we can set it up.

This would be a good addition to TLCP, because some universities might not teach certain courses, but students want to study them. Some students might be from different majors, but want to take this course as an elective, but it might collide with some other courses, then they can sign up for the course, but rely on the recordings and the material online. Usually they will still try to come to class once in a while. 

I began teaching this class in XXX. In 2004, 2005 I began to prepare this website, because it was needed for teaching, by the students. By request of the students, we slowly started putting up recordings, and other material, discussion forums. In 2007, we got provincial TLCP, in 2005 campus TLCP.

At first, the reason for building the site had nothing to do with TLCP, which had not yet launched. It was the request of these outside students who came to listen to classes, and wanted something to connect to while they were away.

At that time students needed a password, not anymore. In 2004, the school started applying for TLCP, asked who had materials, I happened to have them ready. 

We are a teaching team, 5 teachers. Before, it was just me teaching the class, but TLCP required a teaching team. That’s part of the goal, to train young teachers to continue teaching the class, and involve older teachers in undergraduate teaching. There is a difference in China between normal universities, which focus a lot on teaching, and research universities, which focus a lot on research. So normal universities produce more TLCPs.

Without TLCP, we wouldn’t have such a fancy website. We need recordings of every lecture for national level TLCP. Student evaluations are very important, and they are published. We often visit other sites from other disciplines to see how they do it. Received a lot of inspiration from seeing other classes.

Received 100,000 yuan. Buying some equipment, camera, making website. Also some money on excursions. TLCP has not changed my way of teaching. A colleague asked me if we should find someone to help us “polish” the class, because we use a very oral and informal language. I said there is no point, it’s just a reflection of reality, if students interrupt and ask a question, it’s because they want to know something. We shouldn’t make it too fake.

Not familiar with OER. TLCP is a kind of OER. I looked at some for my discipline, students sent me links. I wish all people in society had a chance to access these lectures in the future.
