…and XAMPP

In listing some of the technologies I’d found useful yesterday, I forgot to mention XAMPP, which is an integrated package of Apache, Php and Mysql, all configured to “just work”. Download a 30MB file, on Linux or Window, unpack and you are ready to go. Works out of the box. On Windows, this is a lifesaver, but even on Linux I prefer this to having to configure Apache to use Php and Mysql, having them all start as services when I boot my computer, etc. Working locally when developing webstuff is really so much easier than uploading scripts by ftp to a remote server (even though konqueror of course makes this easier as well).

(There are other such integrated packages, but XAMPP is the one I’ve tested, and it works perfectly on Linux and Windows).

(PS: Tad suggests putting it on a thumbdrive, together with say WordPress, and doing all kinds of neat stuff with it. Just another example of how opensource programs make it easy for people to “add value”, by packing and using the programs in novel ways.)
